‘Kachumbar Salad’ is basically Indian style mix vegetable salad with staple veggies like tomato, onion, cucumber, coriander seasoned with lime and pepper. In winter you can toss seasonal assorted vegetables like spinach, lettuce, carrots, beet, turnip and also add fruits of choice. Though the ingredients are very basic but do not underestimate the taste. When combined, it is an outstanding palate of hot, tangy and savory flavors that goes pretty well with almost any meal. You can add ginger, green chilly, mint and little amount of honey for a refreshing twist.



*This ‘Kachumbar Salad’ tastes great with Methi moong dal khichidi and Persian Shivid Polow. With regular meals, serve with Dal Tadka and Jeera Rice.

*You can also serve a medium bowl of kachumbar salad as a low calorie snack.

*Make amazing sandwiches with this recipe. Layer bread slices with seasoned yogurt and top with a generous amount of freashly tossed kachumbar salad. Your healthy and filling sandwich is ready. You can either toast it or have it as it is!

Recipe Ingredients

  • Onion – 1 medium
  • Cucumber – 1
  • Tomato – 2
  • Fresh coriander – A handful
  • Lime juice – 1 tablespoon
  • Pepper powder – ½ teaspoon
  • Salt – ½ teaspoon or to taste
  • Red chilly powder – A pinch

How to make Kachumbar Salad

  • To begin with making this zesty ‘Kachumbar Salad’ we need to chop all the vegetables. A food processor makes this work a lot easier.
  • Prepare the seasoning by mixing together lime juice, freshly chopped coriander, salt, pepper powder, red chilly powder in a small bowl.
  • Now when the seasoning is ready, combine all the chopped veggies in a big bowl.
  • Pour over the dressing and toss.
  • ‘Kachumbar Salad’ is ready. Let it sit for 5 minutes and give a final toss just before serving.

Tips –

  • If you’re expecting guests for lunch or dinner, then you can make preparations for kachumber salad well in advance to avoid the last minute rush. Just keep all chopped veggies ready (Except onion), prepare the seasoning and keep separately. Before serving, chop onion and mix with other veggies. Pour over the seasoning, toss and serve.
  • Serve finely chopped green chilli and ginger separately in a bowl. Let people combine as per their taste.
  • Add some shredded cabbage, mushrooms, pomegranate for a vibrant look and exotic feel.
  • Sprinkle some chaat masala and chilly flakes for a punch.
