‘Aloo ka raita’ is a wonderful side dish to go with your meals and is great for digestion. The recipe is quick if you have some boiled potatoes in hand and it just takes few minutes to combine all the ingredients and serve along as a healthy accompaniment with any Indian meal. You can add a teaspoon of honey in place of sugar. The best part, this aloo raita can also be made for fasts or vrat, just substitute white salt with sendha namak or farali salt.



Serve this aloo ka raita with masala puri or hari matar ki khichidi for a humble meal and do not miss to serve garlic pickle or instant green chilly pickle on the side.

Aloo ka raita tastes best with Gujarati spinach thepla, home made mango pickle and sonth chutney.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Potato (Boiled n Peeled) – 2 large
  • Fresh yogurt – 1 ½ cups
  • Milk – 1/2 cup
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Ginger (Grated) - 1 tsp
  • Green chilly (Chopped) - 1/2 tsp
  • Sugar – 1 teaspoon
  • Salt – To taste
  • Red chilly powder – A pinch or two

To garnish –

  • Fresh coriander (Chopped) – A handful
  • Cumin powder 

How to make Aloo Raita

  • Roast the cumin seeds till they get a dark brown color and grind into powder. You can grind it either fine or keep it slightly coarse as per choice. Keep aside.
  • Cut the boiled potatoes into 1 inch cubes & keep aside.
  • In a bowl whisk together all the listed ingredients except potatoes and cumin powder. Make sure that the sugar is dissolved well.
  • Add potato chunks, cumin powder and give a gentle mix taking care that the potatoes do not get mushy.
  • ‘Potato Raita’ is ready. Garnish with freshly chopped coriander, roasted cumin powder and serve. To make an enticing platter, do not miss to refer our serving suggestions above.
