Jeera Rice or Cumin Rice is a easy rice recipe or pulao that add tastes with jeera seeds and goes with any other recipe. Lets see how to make jeera rice

Basically, there is no curry be it veg or non veg. that cannot be served with it. Jeera along with assorted whole spices lend a beautiful flavor and aroma to the rice making it truly palatable.

With a final garnish of some freshly chopped coriander, a plate of piping hot jeera rice is an ultimate comfort food that you can relish with some pickle too.

There are basically ‘Two Ways’ to make jeera rice. One is to cook the rice along with cumin seeds and whole spices. While the later involves tempering the cooked rice with spices. Both ways, it tastes phenomenal.



Jeera rice tastes exceptionally good with aloo gobhi subzi, kadhi pakodi, dal tadka, dal makhni, kali masoor ki dal or Punjabi choley. Team with dhaniye ka raita, home made mango pickle and enjoy!

It also tastes great with Andhra Paruppu Podi along with some ghee.

Serve along simple radish onion salad and pickle to complete the meal.

Recipe Ingredients

  •  Raw rice – 1 cup
  • Salt – 1 teaspoon or to taste
  • Water – 2 cups (Adjustable depending the quality of rice)
  • Refined oil/desi ghee – 2 tablespoon

Whole Spices –

  • Cumin seeds – 3 teaspoon
  • Green cardamom – 4
  • Cinnamon – 2 inch stick
  • Bay leaf – 2
  • Black peppercorns – 5-8
  • Cloves – 5  

Ingredients – 2

  • Boiled/cooked rice – 4 cups
  • Oil/ghee – 2 tablespoon
  • Salt – To taste

All the whole spices as above

How to make Jeera Rice | Cumin Rice

Method 1 -
  • So to begin with our first recipe, we need to wash and soak the rice in water for an hour.
  • Heat oil or ghee in a pan. You may also use a pressure cooker or rice cooker.
  • Add in the cumin seeds and whole spices. Fry for a minute till you notice that the spices have changed color and you get a nice aroma.
  • Now add in the soaked rice along with 2 cups of water and salt. (Refer ‘NOTE’)
  • Give a stir and close the lid.
  • Cook on medium heat for 5- 7 minutes or till done to perfection.
  • Remove from heat, but keep the lid closed for 10 minutes.

It is ready to serve.

NOTE –

The quantity of water depends upon your quality of rice and mode of cooking. The given quantity is apt for pressure cooking. But, if using a pan or rice cooker….you might need to add some more water.

Method – 2

  • In this second method we are making jeera rice with cooked rice. Hence unlike the first recipe we don’t need to wash and soak the rice. We would directly start with the ‘Tempering’ part.
  • So let’s begin. Heat oil/ghee in a pan and add in all the whole spices and cumin seeds.
  • Fry for a minute.
  • Add cooked rice, salt and gently mix.
  • Keep on low to medium flame for 2-3 minutes so that it is nice and piping hot while serving.
  • Remove from heat and serve.
