‘Moong dal bhajiya’ or ‘Moong dal pakode’ are lightly spiced fritters with pounded spices, chilly and make a perfect snack for tea time or monsoon days. This is also a popular street food from Gujarat and Mumbai. In Gujarat, they are made without onion-garlic, whereas in Mumbai these moong dal bhajiya are generously flavored with minced garlic, chopped onion and ginger. Also the spice quotient of these Mumbai style fritters is more as compared to those made in Gujarat.

Here we share you the recipe to make ‘Mumbai style’ bhajiyas that are robust in flavors and served with green chilly and lemon wedges.



These moong dal bhajiya make a perfect monsoon snack when paired with Rajasthani green chilly pickle, dahi ki chutney and garlic pickle. Pair with Mumbai style Cutting Chai, bliss!

Serve moong dal bhajiya with methi khakhra, moong dal samosa or paneer and cabbage cutlet if you want to have a lavish festive spread. Do not miss to pair with sweet tamarind chutney, coriander mint chutney, mango pickle and fried green chilly along with giant glasses of Punjabi namkken lassi.

Recipe Ingredients

Moong dal (Split yellow lentil) – 1 cup

Garlic (Minced) – 4 cloves

Ginger (Grated) – 1 teaspoon

Green chilly (finely chopped) – 1 teaspoon or to taste

Onion (finely chopped) – 1 medium

Turmeric powder – 1 teaspoon

Red chilly powder – 1 teaspoon

Salt – To taste

Oil – To deep fry

 

Whole Spices –

Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon

Coriander seeds – 1 tablespoon

Black pepper – 4-6

How to make Moong Dal Bhajiya

To begin with making these tantalizing Mumbai style moong dal bhajias, we need to wash and soak moong dal in sufficient water for 3 hours atleast.

Drain the excess water and grind to a paste. You can keep this paste slight coarse as this gives a wonderful texture.

Empty the paste into a mixing bowl. Keep aside.

Now in a pan roast all the whole spices till aromatic and pound in a mortar pestal or grinder. Add these pounded spices to the dal paste.

Also add in all the powdered spices, chopped/grated veggies, salt and give a nice mix.

Heat sufficient oil in a wok and drop spoonfuls of this batter in small batches.

Deep fry on medium heat till golden and crisp.

Transfer to a plate with kitchen paper to absorb the excess oil.

Serve these bhajias hot with assorted chutneys.
