‘Andhra Paruppu Podi’ is a protein packed spiced powder or chutney powder prepared with roasted spices and lentils. It is usually served with idli, dosa, appam, upma and even with simple steamed rice with a dollop of desi ghee. Andhra podi is a lip smacking and healthy accompaniment for idlis, vada, uttappam or dosa when you have no time to cook rasam and sambhar.

The recipe for this Andhra paruppu podi is age old and every household has a unique and delicious variety. Some make it without garlic, while some even add tamarind for a tangy twist. You can also add sesame seeds, asafetida, dessiccated coconut or vary the amount of red chilly to suit your taste buds.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Arahar dal (Toor dal) – 4 tablespoon
  • Channa dal – 2 tablespoon
  • Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black peppercorns – 5-7
  • Dry red chilly - 2
  • Garlic – 2-3 cloves
  • Salt – To taste
  • Oil – 1 tablespoon

How to make Andhra Paruppu Podi

  • To begin with the recipe, first we need to heat oil in a pan and roast all the ingredients, except salt.
  • Roast on low flame till the ingredients turn golden brown and give out a nice aroma. Remove from heat.
  • Cool at room temperature and grind to a fine or slightly coarse powder with salt. Do not add water while grinding.
  • Store in an air tight container. Stays fresh for more than 2 months.
