Jeera Milagu Rasam also known as Pepper Cumin Rasam is an excellent recipe to indulge in some piping hot rasam with steamed rice in the Main Course and can also be had as a soulful Soup in winters.

Besides the Aurvedic properties of tamarind, pepper, cumin seeds aslo make it a great remedy to boost immune system and fight against general cough and cold that might onset during seasonal changes.

In South Indian Cuisine just like you have Sambhar which is a nice lentil soup with vegetables often had with dosa, idli, utappam, rice…similarly, this Pepper Cumin Rasam is also a delicious curry made with tamarind water mixed with some spices and tempered with cumin seeds, mustard seeds and Ghee. Of course, unlike Sambhar this Pepper Rasam has a very thin or runny consistancy since no lentils or veggies are added that can give a thickness or body to it. But it tastes great and not only you can enjoy it with steamed rice along with some onion and pickle on side, but can also enjoy this rasam as a spiced soup and if you are sometimes feeling low or suffering with minor cough and cold then this rasam is excellent to comfort you when served hot.

Now when we are talking about the Home remedies to boost body immunity, then how can we miss Kadha which is popular in North India and usually made during rainy season and winters. It is a nice decoction of herbs & spices that give warmth to the body curing seasonal cough, cold, sore throat and general seasonal infections. Also get recipes of more simple home remedies like -

  • Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Asafoetida (Hing) - A pinch
  • Curry leaves (Kadi patta) - 1 spring

How to make Pepper Cumin Rasam | Jeera Milagu Rasam

  1. To make Jeera Milagu Rasam or Pepper Cumin Rasam we need to soak tamarind in warm water for an hour atleast.
  2. After soaking mash tamarind well in water to extracty the maximum juice. Now pass this water through a sieve to get clear tamarind water. Keep aside.
  3. Lightly toast cumin seeds, red chilli whole, black pepper over medium heat in a pan and grind to form a fine powder.Keep aside as this is masala for our Pepper Rasam.
  4. In a saucepan take tamarind water and add in pepper masala that we have just prepared. Also add in salt, turmeric powder and stir to combine well.
  5. Bring it to a brisk boil over high heat for a full 5 minutes or till the raw flavor of tamarind water is gone.
  6. Remove it from heat. Rasam is ready, but we also need to temper it to enhance the flavors.
  7. So heat ghee in a tempering pan. Add in asafoetida (Hing), mustard seeds, cumin seeds and curry leaves. When they begin to splutter add this tempering carefully to the cooked rasam.
  8. Pepper Cumin rasam is now ready. Enjoy while it is still hot!
