Recipe Ingredients

  • Idlis – 10
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tea spoon
  • Curry leaves – 5-7
  • Asafetida – A pinch
  • Chana dal – 1 tea spoon
  • Urad dal – 1 tea spoon
  • Green chilly (Chopped) – 1 (Optional)
  • Dry red chilly – 2
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tea spoon
  • Lemon juice – Few drops
  • Salt – To taste
  • Oil – 2 table spoon

To garnish –

  • Freshly chopped coriander
  • Lemon wedges

How to make Idli Upma

  • To begin with making idli upma, first crumble the idlis. No need to use any spoon or knife for this. You can do this best with your hands. Keep these crumbled idlis aside.
  • Now, heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, curry leaves, dry chilly, urad dal, channa dal, asafetida and fry for few seconds or till the lentils become pink and you get a nice aroma.
  • To this add turmeric powder, green chilly and the crumbled idlis. Give a nice stir. Cook for 2 minutes.
  • Season with salt and lemon juice. Remove from heat.

Aromatic idli upma is ready. Transfer to a serving plate, garnish with some freshly chopped coriander and lemon wedges and serve.

Tips –

  • Add some finely chopped vegetables while frying the spices to make healthy ‘Vegetable Idli Upma’.
  • To make upma more rich, you can add dry fruits of choice. ‘Cashews’ taste best in this.
  • ’Rice idlis’ or ‘Rava/semolina idlis’, both can be used in this recipe.
