The super combination of chana dal (Bengal gram) and lauki (Bottle gourd/doodhi) play a wonderful medley in this robust chana dal lauki curry that goes great with almost all kinds of Indian breads and rice. This is a wholesome dish in which you get the goodness of both lentil and vegetable, but the preparation is very different from other dal and curry recipes that we are used to making for regular meals. It is spicy due to a generous use of both whole and powdered spices and tastes somewhat like South Indian sambhar, but the spice proportions are completely different and to know that, you need to check out our recipe !

*This chana dal lauki tastes best when served with pudina parantha, methi akki roti and cumin rice.

*To pack a wholesome lunch box team chana dal lauki with ragi palak wheat n dal thepla or missi roti along with mint rice. Combine with beetroot raita or anar ka raita to balance the spicy notes.

How to make Chana Dal Lauki

  • To begin with making this spicy and wholesome chana dal lauki, we need to wash and soak chana dal in sufficient water for half an hour.
  • Meanwhile, get ready with the remaining ingredients. Peel bottle gourd and cut in 1 inch cubes. Keep aside.
  • Also chop tomatoes into fine pieces and slice the onion. Keep aside.
  • Now heat oil in a pressure cooker and add in all the whole spices. Fry for a minute on medium flame or till you get a nice aroma.
  • Add sliced onion and sauté till pink.
  • To this add chopped tomatoes followed by ginger garlic paste and sauté on medium heat till it separates the oil.
  • If you notice this masala burning at the bottom, sprinkle little water and continue with cooking.
  • Now add in the bottle gourd pieces, soaked lentil or chana dal, salt, water and all the powdered spices.
  • Give a nice stir, close the lid and pressure cook for 4-5 whistles or till everything is cooked to your preference.
  • Remove from heat and let the pressure settle.
  • Chana dal lauki is now ready. Serve hot with rice or roti. For a scrumptious platter, do not miss to refer our serving suggestion.
