‘Bel Ka Sharbat’ is a natural thirst quencher in summers and packed with all the nutritional goodness. ‘Bel’ also known as wood apple, stone apple, bel patthar, ‘Vilvam’ in Tamil and ‘Maredu’ in Telugu is a super food and helps in curing acidity, ulcers and gastronomic disorders. This bel ka sharbat is made using ripe fruit and mixing condiments like black salt, lemon juice, cumin seeds powder and sugar. As the name indicates ‘Wood Apple’, hence the outer covering of bel is very hard and extracting the pulp is bit tricky and laboursome. But, once you gulp down this energy drink, you won’t find better reasons to make it again and again.

Did you know, ‘Bel Tree’ is considered auspicious in Hinduism and the leaves (Bel Patra) and fruits are used to worship Lord Shiva. To know more about bel, read our article .

Serve bel ka sharbat in clay pots as an energy drink or appetizer in summers. Sprinkle some roasted crushed cumin seeds and garnish with a spring of mint.

Make Bel ka Sharbat for Vrat, Navratri or other Falahars. Just skip adding common salt, black salt and substitute it with Farali Salt or Sendha Namak.

You can also accompany bel ka sharbat with regular meals. It pairs great with Bengali bhog khichuri and aloo ka raita.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Bel/wood apple (Ripe) – 1
  • Sugar – 3-4 tablespoon or to taste
  • Water – As required
  • Black salt – ½ teaspoon
  • Lime juice – 2 tablespoon
  • Cumin seeds powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Fresh mint (Chopped) – A handful

How to make Bel Ka Sharbat

  • As mentioned, making bel ka sharbat is a bit tricky as this hard fruit is not very easy to handle.
  • So to begin with our recipe, we need to break open the fruit with a stone Yes….you read correctly, it is that hard….say almost like coconut.
  • Scoop out all the flesh with a spoon.
  • Transfer this flesh/pulp in a bowl and fill with about 1 cup of water or may be a little more. The idea is to soak the entire pulp in water for 4-5 hours. This also makes the whole process easier.
  • After soaking, transfer the pulp along with water to a blender. Blend till it becomes smooth and creamy.
  • Pass this mixture through a sieve and collect the strained mixture into a jug or large bowl.
  • Add 2-3 cups of water depending upon what consistency you prefer.
  • Also add remaining ingredients and stir till the sugar is completely dissolved.
  • Check seasoning, you might want to adjust it.
  • Bel ka sharbat is ready.

Chill in refrigerator and serve with some ice cubes and chopped mint.
