Cabbage Masala Rice is an easy One Pot Meal and is delicious recipe, full of nutrition and can be packed for a quick lunch box. At home make Cabbage Masala Rice for a comfort lunch or dinner and accompany with some Raita and Salad.

This dish is made with leftover rice, cabbage and few staple ingredients. Hence it is one of those hurry burry dishes that are always at your rescue when either you missed on grocery shopping or have no time in hand to make an elaborate meal. With a robust flavor of ginger, garlic and bites of cabbage, this dish is exceptionally easy to make and if you are new to Indian cooking, then you might love to begin with this one. Here we haven’t cooked cabbage completely to retain a crunch, but if you prefer the other way go for it. Also the spices can be adjusted to one’s tastebuds.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Steamed/cooked rice - 3 cups
  • Cabbage (Shredded) - 2 cups
  • Garlic (Finely chopped) - 1 teaspoon
  • Ginger (Finely chopped) - 1 teaspoon
  • Green chilli (Slit lengthwise) - 2
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Red chilli powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Garam masala powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Dry mango powder (Amchur) - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - To taste
  • Oil - 1 tablespoon 

To garnish -

  • Freshly chopped coriander

How to make Cabbage Masala Rice

Making this Cabbage Masala Rice is really quick, easy and as we proceed with the method you would notice this.

  1. So to begin with, heat oil in a pan or wok and add in cumin seeds, green chilli and let it splutter.
  2. Add sliced onion, garlic, ginger and cook till they gain a lovely brown color. This would give a nice flavor of caramalized onions that takes this dish to the next level.
  3. But this browning of onions must be done at low to medium flame while strring constantly to avoid burning.
  4. Now put the flame on high and add in shredded cabbage and stir. Cook for half a minute till it is just tender while retaining the crunch.
  5. Mix in cooked rice, salt and all the powdered spices. Toss nicely to combine everything.
  6. Cook for 2-3 minutes and remove from heat.
  7. Cabbage rice is done. Garnish with freshly chopped coriander and serve. Wasn’t that easy?
