This Jackfruit or Katahal Masala recipe is robust with aromatic herbs and spices and tastes absolutely delicious with all types of Indian breads. The young jackfruit has a very subtle taste and hence absorbs all the beautiful flavors of spices and condiments that go in to it. It has a hard, thick and thorny skin that needs to be shaved off first before chopping the soft inside. But, this is a tedious task and often tricky. To keep it simple, it would be better if you buy the packed chopped pieces easily available in departmental stores.

Did you know, jackfruit has a high content of nutrients like vitamins, minerals, carbohydrate, fiber, fat and protein. Vitamin B5 content in jackfruit fulfills about 25% of our daily requirement and the fat contents are also very low.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Jackfruit (Katahal) cut in tiny pieces – 500 gms.
  • Onion (Sliced) – 2 medium
  • Tomato (Chopped)- 1 medium
  • Ginger garlic paste – 2 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder – 1 teaspoon (Optional)
  • Red chilly powder – 2 teaspoon
  • Garam masala powder – 2 teaspoon
  • Coriander powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Salt – To taste
  • Oil – 2 tablespoon

Whole spices -

  • Bay leaf – 2
  • Cinnamon – 1 inch stick
  • Black cardamom – 2
  • Cloves – 5-8
  • Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • Black peppercorns – 8-10

For marination –

  • Oil – 1 tablespoon
  • Red chilly powder – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper powder – 1/4 teaspoon

How to make Jackfruit Masala

  • To begin with the recipe, we need to marinate the jackfruit first.  In a large bowl, combine jackfruit pieces and all the ingredients for marination. Give a toss so that all the pieces are coated well. Cover the bowl with a lid and keep aside for 1/2 an hour.
  • Next, heat oil in a pressure cooker and add all the whole spices. Saute for a minute on low flame till you get a nice aroma.
  • Add sliced onion and sauté on medium to high flame till light brown in colour.
  • To this add chopped tomatoes, sauté till they turn mushy and the oil separates from the masala.
  • Now add in the marinated jackfruit, season with salt and powdered spices. Give a nice stir.
  • Add about 3 cups of water and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or till the jackfruit is cooked to your perfection.
  • Remove from heat and let the pressure release on its own.
  • Open the lid and check. Though it is now ready to be served, but if you prefer to have it without gravy then cook on medium to high flame (Without lid) for 5 minutes or till the gravy dries up.
  • Remove from heat.

Our spicy jackfruit masala is now ready. Garnish with freshly chopped coriander and relish with paranthas and puris. Do read the ‘Serving Suggestion’ above to plan a balanced platter !
