While making 'Rice kheer' that is made with ‘Raw Rice’ you need to keep cooking it till the rice is completely cooked which takes time. But what if you need to make a quick kheer or dessert at the eleventh hour of any festivity or dinner? Recipe Ingredients

  • Poha (Preferably full cream milk) - 1 cup
  • Milk - 2 cups + 1/2 cup
  • Sugar - 2 tablespoon or to taste
  • Cardamom powder - Less than 1/4 teaspoon
  • Ghee - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Dry fruits of choice

How to make Aval payasam

To begin with making this instant Aval Payasam we need to wash poha first.

  1. Take poha in a strainer and wash under tap water. Empty this in a bowl, add 1/2 cup of milk and soak for 10 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile chop your nuts. Take ghee in a pan and roast the nuts on low flame till golden.
  3. Add in the milk, soaked poha and bring to a boil. Do not miss to keep stirring to avoid the burning at the base of your pan.
  4. When it comes to a boil, add in the sugar and simmer on low flame for 5-10 minutes or till you get the consistency to your preference. Season with cardamom powder and remove from heat.
  5. Aval Payasam is now done. Either serve hot or cool at room temperature and chill in refrigerator, it tastes good both ways.

Notes -

Though you can skip the step of soaking poha in milk and add it directly after washing to the boiling milk. But I prefer soaking as it gives a lovely flavor.
