Matar Poha  is one recipe that is very popular in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Its also known as Chura Matar. To make matar poha we need 2 cup of Green Pees, Washed and Drained Poha, Cumin seeds, Ginger Chilly Paste, Oil, Salt, Chopped Corriender to garnish and spices as mentioned in our ingredients list.

Usually, Matar Poha is made during winters when fresh seasonal green peas are in abundance and served in Breakfast or as an Evening Snack. Though it tastes yumm with a cup of Masala Chai, but you can also serve it with Garlic Chutney or Khatti Chutney

Born and brought up in Lucknow, I have grown up eating Chura Matar. My grandmother used to cook this dish in Desi Ghee and it used to taste just wonderful. Today when I make this at home, I try my level best to bring out those flavors.....but it's not easy. Even my mother in law is expert in cooking Chura Matar and she loves to add potatoes too.

So here I bring you this recipe of the Matar Poha that I have inherited from my elders!

For a healthy and simple Breakfast, team up matar poha with the classic coriander mint chutey, ginger n black pepper pickle  or garlic pickle.

Matar poha tastes great when paired with doodhi ka raita or potato raita. This combo also makes it a wonderful evening snack.

To pack matar poha in Tiffin, team with aloo channe ki ghugani, beans poriyal or paneer burji along with some homemade healthy drink like chaas!

Recipe Ingredients

  • Poha (Chiwda/Beaten rice) – 1.5 cups
  • Green peas – 2.5 cups
  • Asafoetida (Hing) – 1/4 tea spoon
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tea spoon
  • Ginger chilly paste – 1 tea spoon
  • Garam masala – 1 tea spoon
  • Sugar – 1 tea spoon (Optional)
  • Salt – To taste
  • Ghee/vegetable oil – 3 table spoon

 To serve –

  • Freshly chopped coriander/mint
  • Desi ghee (Indian clarified butter)

How to make Matar Poha

  • To make matar poha, we need to wash poha in a strainer, drain well and keep aside for 5-10 minutes.
  • In a wok heat ghee/oil. Add cumin seeds, when they crackle add asafetida and ginger chilli paste. Cook till oil separates.
  • Add in green peas. Sprinkle some water and cover the wok.
  • Cook on low flame for 10 minutes or till the peas are cooked.
  • Now, add washed poha, garam masala, sugar and salt to taste. Give a nice stir and cook (Uncovered) for the next 5 minutes. Remove from heat.

Banarsi style choora matar is ready. Before serving add a dollop of desi ghee and garnish with fresh coriander/mint. Relish with a cup of tea. You can also enjoy it with tangy green chutney.

Tip –

Use ‘Thick’ variety of poha to make this dish. The thin variety won’t give good results.
