Lobia Masoor Dal is an amazing dal recipe with beautiful combination of flavors and textures that is made in Punjabi households. It is a wonderful medley of Masoor Dal and Chawali or Lobia also known as Cowpeas or Black Eyed Beans. Lobia Masoor Dal is a perfect way to awaken your sences on a lazy winter day and pairs great with rotis and rice.

One thing that I truely admire about Punjabi cuisine is the way they use lentils and often the combination of lentils and the aromatic rich Tadka of ghee, cumin seeds, onion, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, chilli that you won’t find in any other cuisine. Not only this, we can also learn the amazing medley of vegetables with dals like the Aloo Chawali Beans Sabzi and Aloo Chole.

Did you know, Chawali or Lobia belongs to the Legume family and surprisingly is one of the rarest used dal in Indian cuisine. Perhaps the reason might be that it is almost neutral in taste, but it is exceptionally good for your body and is a power house of nutrients. Not only it has a high content of fiber, minerals, but it is also great for weight loss, diabetics and lowers blood cholesterol levels. So for all those Weight Watchers out here, include Chawali in your regular diet to stay healthy and fit.

We have lots of recipes to share with you from the very rich Punjabi cuisine that you would love to try -

Punjabi Kadhi Pakodi

Masoor Dal Tadka

Dal Makhni

Punjabi style Masala Bhindi-Okra Gravy

Kadhai Egg Curry Recipe

Soya Saag Aloo ….. and more !

Lobia Masoor Dal is made slight thick and hence goes great not only with rice, but also with chapatis or paranthas. So you can team this dal with Palak Parantha or Missi Roti and Jeera or Cumin Rice. Team your meal with Lauki Raita or Boondi Raita along with seasonal Kachumbar Salad.

How to make Lobia Masoor Dal

Washing and Soaking Lentils ( Dal )  -

  1. There is nothing complicated in this recipe of Lobia Massor Dal. To begin with making this wash lobia and massor dal together with water in a strainer. Now put this in a bowl, add about 2 or more cups of water to cover it completely and keep aside for soaking for an hour.

Cooking Lobia Masoor Dal -

  1. After soaking drain away the excess water. Put soaked lentils in a pressure cooker with remaining ingredients listed under first category.
  2. Season with salt and add water. Put on the lid and pressure cook on high heat for a whistle. Now reduce the flame and lety it simmer for 8-10 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and let the pressure settle down. After opening the lid mash dal roughly with a laddle. Do not blend with an electric blender otherwise it would become smooth and loose all the texture.

Tempering -

  1. Heat ghee in a pan and add in cumin seeds. When they begin to splutter add chopped garlic and fry till golden.
  2. Switch off the flame and immediately pour this tempering over cooked dal.
  3. Lobia Massor Dal is now ready to serve, but before that do not miss to garnish with chopped coriander and top with some ghee.
