Recipe Ingredients

  • Whole black lentil (Sabut masoor dal) – 1 cup
  • Cinnamon – 1 inch stick
  • Bay leaf - 1
  • Salt – To taste
  • Water – 3 cups

To be ground -

  • Ginger – 1 inch piece
  • Garlic – 2 cloves
  • Coriander seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black peppercorns – 3-4
  • Cloves – 2

For tempering (Optional) –

  • Ghee – 2 tablespoon
  • Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • Red chilly powder – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Dry red chilly - 2

For garnish –

  • A handful of freshly chopped coriander
  • Juliennes of ginger
  • Butter (Optional)

How to make Kali Masoor Dal

  • To begin with making this delicious kali masoor ki dal, first we need to soak the dal/lentil in sufficient water for at least 4 hours. Drain the excess water and keep aside.
  • In a pan, dry roast coriander seeds, black peppercorns & cloves. Grind to a smooth paste along with ginger n garlic using little amount of water. Our spice mixture is now ready.
  • Now, take the soaked lentil in a pressure cooker. To this add the spice mixture, salt, cinnamon stick, bay leaf, water and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles. Turn off the flame.
  • Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid of cooker. Discard the cinnamon stick and bay leaf.
  • Meanwhile, we would be preparing the tempering. For this, heat ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds and dry red chilly.
  • When they begin to crackle, add red chilly powder and immediately pour over the cooked dal.

Delicious kali masoor ki dal is ready. Filling and healthy, right ?
