Methi  Dal (  Moong  ) is a lip smacking dal recipe with fresh fenugreek greens or methi saag and split yellow lentils or moong dal. It is nutritious, protein packed and goes amazing with phulkas and rice.

A mild seasoning with simple spices add a new flavor to this dish that makes it very different from the staple dal recipes that you are used to making on everyday basis. Yes, it does breaks the monotony on your dining table!

Here we have generously tempered this methi dal with onion and garlic for that distinct aroma n flavors, but you can omit if prefer to make a No onion garlic version, the choice is up to you. Also if you want to make a Zero Oil Recipe, then completely refrain from Tempering or Chowk and cook methi saag along with dal in pressure cooker. Though any dal recipe always tastes better after tempering, but sometimes if you need to restrict your diet due to medical reasons, then this is surely going to help you out. Methi dal ( moong ) is an amazing side dish with your meals. Recipe Ingredients

  • Moong dal (Split yellow lentil) - 1 cup
  • Fenugreek leaves / Methi saag (Cleaned & chopped) - 1 cup
  • Tomato (Chopped) - 1 medium
  • Ginger (Grated) - 1 teaspoon
  • Green chilly (Slit lengthwise) - 2
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red chilly powder - 1 teaspoon or to taste
  • Coriander powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Onion (Sliced) - 1 medium
  • Garlic (Chopped) - 1-2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - To taste
  • Water - 2-2.5 cups
  • Ghee - 1 tablespoon

How to make Methi Dal ( Moong Dal )

This Methi Dal (Moong) is super delicious and once you try in your kitchen, you would agree too. So to begin with making it we need to Cook the lentil first. Here you get detailed instructions - 

Washing-Soaking-Cooking Moong Dal -

  1. Take moong dal in a strainer and wash under tap water till you notice clear water coming out of it. Transfer this to a bowl and add water. Soak it for about half an hour.
  2. Now transfer this soaked dal in a pressure cooker. Add 2-2. cups of water, turmeric powder, salt and close the lid.
  3. Pressure cook for 2-3 whistles or till it is cooked to your perfection. Switch off the flame and let the pressure settle down.
  4. Open the pressure cooker and you would see that the dal is cooked well and now we can proceed to our recipe. You can lightly mash it with a ladle. 

Making Methi  Dal ( Moong  ) -

  1. Now heat ghee in a pan and add in the cumin seeds. When they begin to crackle add onion, garlic, green chilly, ginger and saute for few minutes till onions get a light brown color.
  2. Add in coriander powder, tomato and saute till tomatoes get mushy.
  3. Time to add in the methi greens. Give a nice mix and cook uncovered for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add the cooked dal and stir. You can add more water if prefer and let it come to a boil.
  5. Check salt and switch off the heat.
  6. Methi Dal  Moong is now ready. Serve as suggested, but do not miss to add a dollop of Ghee before serving. Enjoy your meal….!
