Panakam or Panagam is a very traditional drink from South India and is often served in temples as naivedyam or prasadam. Panakam means ‘Sweet Drink’ in Sanskrit and as it is made with jaggery or gur as the main ingredient, hence it is very soothing and refreshing for summers. But of course, the recipe is age old that involves melting jaggery with some condiments like cardamom, black pepper, dry ginger that energize the body and acts as natural glucose.



Did you know, ‘Jaggery’ (or gur) is made from unrefined sugar, and is obtained by boiling raw, concentrated sugar cane juice till it solidifies. Although jaggery is also made from the sap of coconut and date palm, the one made from sugar cane is the one that's used most widely. Recipe Ingredients

  • Jaggery (Gur/palm sugar) – ½ cup
  • Water – 2 cups
  • Edible camphor – A pinch (Optional)
  • Dry ginger powder (Sonth) – ½ teaspoon
  • Black pepper powder – A pinch or two
  • Salt – A pinch
  • Green cardamom (Crushed) – 2
  • Holy basil (Tulsi patti) – 4-6

How to make Panakam

  • Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  • Lower the flame and continue cooking for 2 more minutes or till the jaggery has completely melt down.
  • Remove from flame.
  • ‘Panakam’ is ready. Strain and chill in refrigerator.

Garnish with basil leaves and serve.

Tip –

Add some lemon juice to panakam just before serving. This would enhance the flavor and make it more refreshing.
