Sweet tamarind chutney is the most traditional chutney recipe used in Indian cuisine. To make this sweet and spicy tamarind chutney,  we need tamarind pulp, jaggery, bay leaf, powdered spices - black pepper, red chilly , salt, dry ginger powder ( sonth ) and other spices from ingredient list.

Tamarind Chutney is widely served with samosa, chaat, pakodi and other snacks. Also known as ‘Imli ki chutney’ in Hindi, it has a mix of flavors….sweet, salty, spicy, tangy all at the same time.

But of course, the recipe to make this very traditional Indian sauce is age old that requires tamarind pulp, jaggery or cane sugar and assortment of whole and powdered spices.  You can make fresh tamarind pulp at home or can buy it readymade from the market. But, the flavors that you get in homemade tamarind pulp are unbeatable !

So follow our recipe to make this khatti meethi imli ki chutney. To make in large quantity, you can double the recipe and store the chutney in an air tight container in refrigerator. Stays fresh upto 2 months!



Since this sweet tamarind chutney is robust in flavors, hence it is served with all types of chaat dishes like dahi puri, samosa, dahi bhalle and also mixed with Bengali jhal muri.

Serve this khatti meethi imli ki chutney with aloo methi tikki, bread dahi vada with potatoes n sprouts, corn fritters, baked bread cutlets !

You can also serve it with regular Indian meals. Kids love to have it with spinach thepla.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Tamarind pulp – 3/4  cup
  • Jaggery/cane sugar/gur (Broken) – 1 cup
  • Black salt – 1 teaspoon
  • Water – 1 cup or as required
  • Salt – To taste

Powdered spices –

  • Black pepper powder– 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red chilly powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Ginger powder (Sonth powder) – 1 teaspoon

Whole spices –

  • Onion seeds (Nigella seeds or kalonji) – 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander seeds (Slightly crushed) – 2 teaspoon
  • Fennel seeds – 2 teaspoon
  • Bay leaf – 2

How to make Sweet Tamarind Chutney

  • To make this sweet tamarind chutney, first we need to combine tamarind pulp, jaggery and water in a wok or skillet. Refer our article….”How to make tamarind pulp at home?”
  • Switch on the flame and bring the ingredients to a boil on medium to high flame.
  • When jaggery has melt down completely, lower the flame and add in all the whole spices, powdered spices and both the salts.
  • Give a nice stir and let it simmer for 10 minutes or till the chutney gains a little thickness. Do remember, it would get more thick as it cools down.
  • Switch off the flame and discard the bay leaves. Let it cool at room temperature.
  • Store in an air tight container and keep in refrigerator. Serve whenever required or with our delectable snacks, refer SERVING SUGGESTION !
