Navratan Dal is an exotic preparation of lentils that is sure to please taste buds and spice up your day. ‘Navratna’ means ‘9 Jewels’, hence this dish gets this name as it is prepared with nine different types of lentils or dal. Few lentils are used with the skin while others are not and this is the reason that this navratna dal has some amazing textures. The addition of assorted spices, onion, tomato, chilly, garlic make it robust with flavors and aroma. This is also a simple and wholesome dish as you get the goodness of so many pulses/lentils in a single bowl of navratna dal. Serve with phulka, laccha parantha, naan or rice you’re going to love it anyway.

If we talk about the traditional recipe of navratna dal, it uses loads of ghee & spices making it heavy on palate. How to make Navratan Dal

To begin with making this robust ‘Navratan dal’ we need to wash and soak the lentils first.

Washing & Soaking Lentils –

  • Take all the pulses or lentils in a strainer and wash under tap water till clear liquid comes out. Now transfer these lentils to a bowl and soak in sufficient water for an hour at least.
  • Heat ghee in a pressure cooker, add all the whole spices and fry for a minute on medium flame.
  • Add in the sliced onion and sauté till pink followed by chopped tomato and ginger garlic paste. Saute till it separates from the ghee.
  • Now it’s time to add in all the soaked lentils, powdered spices, salt and water.
  • Give a nice stir and close the lid. Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles.
  • Remove from heat and let the pressure release on its own.
  • Open the pressure cooker, if you notice that the dal is too thick then you can add some more water and pressure cook for 2 more whistles.
  • Navratna dal is ready, but we need to temper it. If you want to cut on calories then simply omit this step.
  •
  • For Tempering –
  • Heat ghee in a pan. Add cumin seeds, cloves and fry for few seconds.
  • Next add in sliced onion, chopped garlic, slit chilly and cook till golden brown
  • At last add in the red chilly powder and mix.
  • Remove from heat and pour over this tempering over dal.
  • Navratna is ready to be served. To create a scrumptious platter, you might want to refer our serving suggestions above!
